Advanced Age Calculator
Age is counted differently across cultures. This calculator follows the most common age system, where a person’s age increases on their birthday each year. For example, someone who has lived for 3 years and 11 months is considered 3 years old, and their age will increase to 4 on their next birthday, one month later. Most Western countries use this system.
In some cultures, age is counted differently. For instance, some traditions consider the current year as part of a person’s age. This means a 20-year-old person in one culture may be considered 21 in another.
One notable example is the traditional Chinese age system, where people are born at age 1, and their age increases on the Traditional Chinese New Year rather than their birthday. This can lead to unique cases. For example, if a baby is born one day before the Chinese New Year, then two days later, the baby will be considered 2 years old—even though they have only been alive for 2 days.
Additionally, in some cases, the months and days calculation of this age calculator may seem confusing—especially when the starting date falls at the end of a month.
For example, we consider February 20 to March 20 as one full month. However, calculating the time between February 28, 2022, and March 31, 2022, can be done in two ways:
- If we count February 28 to March 28 as one month, then the result is one month and 3 days.
- If we count both February 28 and March 31 as the end of the month, then the result is simply one month.
Both calculations are valid. Similar cases occur with dates like April 30 to May 31 and May 30 to June 30 due to the uneven number of days in different months.
In our calculations, we use the first method, where the number of days within a month is counted consistently to maintain accuracy.
